No Precedent for Republicans to Deny Supreme Court Nominee a Hearing

US-constitution.jpg

With just 310 days remaining in his term, President Obama has just nominated Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court.  Senate Republicans refuse to even vote on his nominee.  They would like us to think it’s because he is leaving office in a little over 300 days.  They would also like us to think that this is a normal way for the Senate to behave.  It is not.

The Senate has voted on thirteen Supreme Court nominees submitted with less than 300 days left in a Presidential term.  Eight of these were submitted with less than ninety days left in the Presidential term.  In the Senate’s swiftest action, Samuel Nelson was voted on with just twenty-eight days left in the Presidential term.

Days Left in Presidential Term When Supreme Court Nominees Were Named

There is no precedent for the Senate’s refusal to vote on President Obama’s latest Supreme Court nominee.  This is all about politics.  Senate Republicans have prioritized their agenda over their obligation to abide by the US Constitution.

I am fed up with politicians who value their own power more than the very foundation of our government.  It’s time to do something about it.  For some, it may be voting for an outsider candidate like Trump or Sanders.  But whoever you support as the Presidential nominee, consider voting against the obstructionist Senators who are refusing to follow the constitution.

Twenty-one Republican Senators are up for reelection this year.  If they indeed refuse to vote any Obama nominee, their constituents should vote them out of office.

Do you live in one of the states below?  Please consider this when you vote, and send this post to others in your state.  Call these Senators and remind them that they swore to uphold the Constitution.  We can only have a functioning government of those elected to serve function.
